Ingredients

- 1 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup shortening
- 1 egg, well beaten
- 1 1/4 cups flour
- 4 tablespoons cocoa
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 cup sour milk
- 1/2 cup coffee (hot)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 2 cups sugar
- 2/3 cup milk
- 1/2 cup cocoa
- 1/2 cup shortening (crisco)
- 1 pinch salt
Recipe
- 1 preheat oven to 375.
- 2 grease and flour a long pyrex dish.
- 3 cream sugar and shortening until sugar is fluffy.
- 4 add well beaten egg.
- 5 sift together the flour, cocoa, salt, and baking soda.
- 6 add flour mixture to sugar mixture alternately with sour milk.
- 7 add hot coffee and vanilla.
- 8 beat until well mixed.
- 9 pour into prepared pan. bake until done but do not overcook.
- 10 icing: mix sugar, salt, and cocoa together.
- 11 add shortening and milk.
- 12 bring to a swift boil.
- 13 cook for 1 minute, stirring well.
- 14 remove from heat.
- 15 beat with electric mixer until thick and smooth.
- 16 if it begins to thicken too much, add a tablespoon of heavy cream.
