Red Devil's Food Cake And Red Devil's Food Cake Icing

Ingredients

  • Servings: 12
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 egg, well beaten
  • 1 1/4 cups flour
  • 4 tablespoons cocoa
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 cup sour milk
  • 1/2 cup coffee (hot)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup cocoa
  • 1/2 cup shortening (crisco)
  • 1 pinch salt

Recipe

  • 1 preheat oven to 375.
  • 2 grease and flour a long pyrex dish.
  • 3 cream sugar and shortening until sugar is fluffy.
  • 4 add well beaten egg.
  • 5 sift together the flour, cocoa, salt, and baking soda.
  • 6 add flour mixture to sugar mixture alternately with sour milk.
  • 7 add hot coffee and vanilla.
  • 8 beat until well mixed.
  • 9 pour into prepared pan. bake until done but do not overcook.
  • 10 icing: mix sugar, salt, and cocoa together.
  • 11 add shortening and milk.
  • 12 bring to a swift boil.
  • 13 cook for 1 minute, stirring well.
  • 14 remove from heat.
  • 15 beat with electric mixer until thick and smooth.
  • 16 if it begins to thicken too much, add a tablespoon of heavy cream.
